This series of lectures will describe the difference between acute pain and chronic pain. It will then go on to describe a multimodal approach to chronic pain control, concentrating on the alleviation of pain associated with osteoarthritis. The following techniques for pain controlled will be described in detail: nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, NMDA antagonists, weight loss, exercise, regenerative stem cell therapy, hyaluronic acid, polysulfated glycosaminoglycans, elk velvet antler, microlactin, opioids and opioid-like drugs, anticonvulsants, acupuncture, therapeutic laser, and pulsed-elctromagnetic field therapy. Using a combination of therapies allows the control of osteoarthritis pain in over 99% of dogs and cats. Specific cases of arthritis in dogs and cats will be presented to help clarify the use of the above techniques. CE Credits: 1 Hour
